what happened?
ok so where did I go? well as you can probably see my post count started dropping right the way back in March when I got my Xbox 360
though as ever the game functionality hasnt managed to hold my attention very long - I haven’t actually played it more than a few times in the last few months - though I have used the video and audio streaming functionality a fair bit. It would be nice to have an itunes style interface inside xbox live.. maybe with zune coming out thats what will happen?
So if I have not been playing with the 360 for the last 2 months what ha been happening? Well major disenchantment with the whole web 2.0 thing (which managed to resurrect itself briefly phoneix-like from the ashes in my last post only to collapse further into the depths immediately after) and then even greater disenchantment with Wordpress.
For the last month or so I moved back to my old livejournal blog to blog about personal stuff that has been happening mainly cuz I needed somewhere to blog and the various permission levels inside Live Journal are a dream to use. Wordpress on the other hand involves me hacking core files or using a couple of plugins that give me no confidence that over time the posts will stay private to the relevant groups!
On top of that I have been having so many niggling issues with Wordpress since I upgraded from 1.5.2 that i knew I’d have to rebuild it and so I stopped using it till that was done. In the end the issues were all around the permalink system and my provider Kualo, which could only be solved by increasing the size of my “permalink file” from a few hundred bytes to 7k in size
thankfully Wordpress generated that for me
So I’m back though I am going to continue using Live Journal for my personal posts going forward - if you want access.. request it from the contact Riaz page…
news international :(
It’s not often I write about football on here - even though it consumes a fair part of my life
(usually involving Liverpool FC..)Anyhow, without repeating previous blog entries on the subject about the quality of the press these days, I feel I have to rant and rave about the New of the World. I cannot believe that in a World Cup year they feel it appropriate to undermine the England team in any way. For those of you not in England, the News of the World published an article which involved hoodwinking the England football manager into speculating what would happen after the World Cup. Unfortunately there were comments about existing England players and that the England manager would leave after the World Cup.
Now the players have all come out and backed the manager, but it cannot help matters. Why can’t the press just get behind the team for once?
What is worse is that despite outrage by people calling in to Sky Sports against the paper, the few newspapers I saw this morning all lambasted the England manager.
OK. I’ll stop now.
[update] fonts fixed, hyperlinks fixed. (hint: don’t use word as your blog post writer).
xmas
Who would have thought it would take me this long to write a post having been off work since Monday! I was wondering what I would do with myself last week but as usual when the time actually comes there is too much to do in the time.. coffees with friends I have somehow not met up with in the past few months, meetings about some interesting new ideas as well as the mandatory last minute xmas shopping of course
more on the ideas later
Anyhow, lots has been happening so here goes..
dont get the Motorola A1000!
arghhhhhh! Well it has not been a good start to the day I give you, but for the past 4 years I seem to have had an inane knack of picking the wrong mobile phone. First the 1st gen SPV from Orange (Microsoft’s 1st Gen mobile phone) and then the 2nd gen - both lasted me no more than 3 months due to their umm inability to be a phone (dropped calls and inability to answer them being minor problems in a phone..). Anyhow Back in Feb I got the Motorola A1000. To be fair to it, it all seemed to be going ok for 4 or 5 months, the problems I had with it were not major enough for me to return it:
vibrate is non existant
on start and on shutdown if the sound is on a jingle is played. Fine set it as the default if you must, but allow me to switch it off!!!!!!
it crashed a few times
No in the past few months, it seems to have developed a few really irritating problems. The clock seems to run slow and then fast - jumping almost an hour this morning - not exactly an hour (and daylight saving was switched off because that didnt work when it was supposed to anyhow). Thankfully this happened the other way round a while back so I no longer use this phone as my alarm clock.. on top of that, it has been doing a mighty good impression of the 1st and 2nd gen SPVs - it has rebooted when I answer a call several times now and there always seems to be a delay when I answer the phone. I actually have to consciously pause before saying "hello".
OK rant over
