quiz night

Headed up to Belsize Park for a pub quiz last night - None of us thought much of our chances but they are always a laugh! We somehow managed to come 3rd (actually joint second but lost the tie break which was “how many acres is the largest dept store in london?” (at least I think that was the question!) The answer was 50 point something.. we started our guess at 80 and ended up putting 120 oops!

mobile phone companies rediscover phones?

must be the time of year or something - had another call from a mobile phone company - this time Carphone Warehouse - asking me how a meeting went with them (the meeting was almost 6 months ago!). Madness!

incidentally - i got a load of voicemails that had been sent over the past week (or so?) - explains o2’s call last week.. not happy!

o2 having problems?

o2 logoI just had a call from O2 (UK mobile phone provider) asking how everything was and whether I have had any problems receiving text messages or phone calls and whether I was happy with my contract. Is this unusually good customer service from the a mobile provider or a hint at something else?

Interestingly I did have problems receiving texts when I was in Greece end of September/early October but put it down to international roaming issues. I wonder if there is anything to it..

404 errors, Wordpress 2 and password protected directories

Another day, another upgrade to Wordpress which breaks my password protected pages with 404 errors I spent months trying to fix before and stupidly did not make a note of the link when I fixed it back in August.

Thankfully others have now found better solutions which should stop Wordpress breaking on future upgrades. All you need to do is add the following to your .htaccess file:

ErrorDocument 401 /[path_to_file]/myerror.html
ErrorDocument 403 /[path_to_file]/myerror.html

(noting that the path and file name need to be accuarate and working.. )

solution was found rather ironically on a competing blog publishing tool’s website: http://textpattern.com/faq/173/password-protected-directories-with-htaccess

firefox conversion

ok so the test with opera collapsed - I stopped using it very shortly after my last post. Too inflexible and I just didnt like the interface. I went back to IE 7 before trying the final release of Firefox 2..

.. and now I am a convert again for the first time in about 9 months. I wonder how long it will last this time - I have a sneaky feeling this time could be for good. It brings back memories of when I switched from Netscape to IE all those years ago. So why the change?

Delicious integration, mouse gestures, faster AJAX sites, more plugins - and more importantly it doesn’t feel like im now missing out on anything by switching.. IE7 feels no quicker than firefox and there was only things to gain by switching.

One great thing about the delicious integration is its allowing me to access my work and home favourites whether I am at home or work. This convergence between web and desktop is definitely the way to go - I disliked delicious.com as a website app - I used it only to store random links I hardly used (and therefore rarely logged into it). Now it stores all my links and I use it daily.
